Nirvana and Enlightenment #154

It is a common practice that many schools of Buddhism lay down all kinds of rules, evaluations, and doctrines for the way a student should embrace the philosophy.

Do these schools understand the essence of Zen?

Zen is not about formality.
In fact, formality is in direct contrast to Zen.

Zen is about communing with the Supreme Understanding and obtaining Buddhahood.
But, this attainment is kept from the student by all of the formalities.

Do the enlightened hold onto formality?
Do the enlightened need ceremonies?
Do the enlightened follow rituals?

No, the enlightened do not.
But, those who want to promise step-by-step advancement have a plethora of rules, ceremonies, and rituals.

Many teachers of Zen do not understand Zen.

Let go of teaching.
Forget formality.
Become the enlightenment of Zen.
