Breakfast and Productivity

Breakfast and Productivity

Breakfast is the key to productivity and your ability to focus and process information. Start the day with a breakfast high in protein, some good quality fat (Your brain requires some saturated fat to function) and carbohydrates. Include carbs from fresh fruits or whole grains. The protein and fat are needed to maintain and build muscle, slow down the effect of the carbs for a steady energy flow and to keep you full longer.

Protein and fat will help to eliminate cravings for sugar and caffeine and avoid a mid- morning slump. (Caffeine and sugar will give you a quick pick me up but an energy crash will follow soon after, leaving you tired and with additional cravings.) The fiber found naturally in a piece of fresh fruit will allow the carbohydrates in that fruit to provide a rise in energy that will be sustained for a longer period of time than either juice or carbs from sugar or refined white flour. If you are having grains as your carbs, they need to be 100% whole grains to maintain energy flow. Taking the time to plan your breakfast the night before will help you to have the energy you need to be energized, focused and productive.

Below are some ideas. Be creative. Left overs can also be good breakfast choices!

Vegetable omelette (fresh spinach or broccoli, avocado, tomato, peppers etc.)
Fresh fruit
Egg Sandwich - a couple of organic or hormone free eggs with a piece of 100% whole grain toast and a little organic butter (A sandwich made at home may travel well.) Try adding some fresh organic arugula or spinach leaves to the sandwich-good even in the morning!
Protein Shake with a tablespoon of flax oil and fresh fruit
Left over grilled chicken and vegetables
Turkey breast sandwich with a piece of fruit.
Oatmeal (steel cut oats are the best but take a longer time to prepare) Old fashioned are better than instant. Try them with some almond milk from the health food store. Add some protein with walnuts, hemp hearts or a little protein powder. Try mixing in a few raisins or fresh fruit.
