The Heart and Snow Shoveling

If you have heart issues, you may want to think twice about digging out of the latest snowstorm. New research shows that people with heart problems have a real, increased risk of suffering a heart attack while shoveling snow. Because not everyone with heart issues is aware that they have them, it’s a good idea to get checked out by your doctor before you decide to exert yourself in the cold.
Smokers and people with a family history of heart disease are especially at risk for heart troubles. If you get the OK by your physician, practice these safe shoveling techniques to prevent injuries. Instead of waiting for all of the snow to settle, shovel early and often. New snow is lighter and easier to pick up.
Warm up first by walking or marching in place. Instead of scooping, lifting and throwing, push snow to the side, or walk it to where it needs to be dumped and turn the shovel over.
