Boundries 1

Do you want my help to solve a problem or do you want to vent?
This is a great question to ask when dealing with chronic complainers. While that is one option, a much more effective tactic is to ask, "Do you want my help to solve a problem or do you want to vent?" Often complainers just want to vent.

In that case say, "I've got four minutes. What's on your mind?" At the end of the pre-determined time, wrap up with, "I hope that helped; I really do have to get back to work now." Then get back to doing whatever it is you do.
