Sugar Alcohols

Some sugar-free products can affect diabetics. If eaten in large amounts, sugar alcohols like xylitol may increase blood sugar levels.

If you have diabetes or are trying to control your blood sugar, go easy on foods containing sugar alcohol. Though generally considered okay in small amounts, sugar alcohols like maltitol, sorbitol and lactitol can raise blood sugar levels in some people when eaten to excess.
Since they are commonly found in processed, sugar-free foods like gum, hard candies, soft drinks, cookies and other sweets, limiting your intake of these kinds of foods is your best bet.
