Sugar-Sweetened Drinks and High Blood Pressure

Need to get your blood pressure down?
Cutting back on soda and other sugary beverages, like fruit punch and lemonade, can help.

Got a serious soda habit? It could be contributing to high blood pressure. By reducing the amount of sugar-sweetened drinks you knock back, you can also bring down your BP reading, according to a study in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

The average American drinks 28 ounces of sugar-sweetened beverages a day!
That’s almost 19 teaspoons of sugar, or 300 extra calories, a day. Even if you give up only one daily can of cola, you may be able to bring your systolic and diastolic numbers down by more than a point. Replace it with water or unsweetened iced tea. If you’re looking for a little sweetness, add a splash of grape juice to some seltzer.
