Practice What You Preach!

Is your doctor a healthy role model? Research suggests MDs who follow a healthful lifestyle are more likely to advise you to do the same.

Does your family physician practice what he or she preaches? A new study published in the journal Preventive Cardiology suggests that doctors who take good care of themselves are more likely to educate their patients on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Doctors who exercised regularly were more apt to stress the importance of physical activity than those who never hit the gym. However, the researchers also found that overweight physicians were more likely to talk to their patients about the benefits of making healthy lifestyle changes — perhaps, the researchers say, because they were working on making those changes in themselves. When looking for a new doctor, choose one who would make a good health role model and takes preventive care seriously.
